WEIZMANN INSTITUTE SCIENTISTS SUGGEST THAT IMMUNE CELLS HELP TO MAINTAIN COGNITION AND BRAIN CELL RENEWAL

January 26, 2006 -- A team of scientists at the Weizmann Institute of Science, led by Proneuron’s scientific founder Prof. Michal Schwartz, has come up with new findings that may have implications in delaying and slowing down deterioration of memory and learning ability in old age. The basis for these anticipated developments is Schwartz's team's observations, published in the February 2006  issue of Nature Neuroscience, that immune cells seem to be key players in the brain’s ability to maintain cognitive ability and cell renewal throughout life.

The Weizmann Institute press release appears at
http://wis-wander.weizmann.ac.il/site/en/weizman.asp?pi=371&doc_id=4427.

Prof. Schwartz’s research provides the basis for the therapeutic technologies currently under development by Proneuron Biotechnologies, to treat spinal cord injury, stroke and a number of other neurological conditions.
